Free public demo on defoliation technique
by Mother Lode Bonsai Club
Leaf cutting, or defoliation is an advanced technique in bonsai training used to enhance the appearance of broadleaf evergreens and most deciduous trees. The primary purpose is to accelerate growth and reduce the size of the miniature tree’s leaves to keep them more in proportion with the trunk and branches. According to Joan Scroggs, senior sensei (teacher) at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club, this method should be done between early to midsummer.
A demonstration on defoliation will be offered free to the public by Sensei David Anderson of Pine Grove on Saturday, June 6 at the former Calaveras County Water District office at 423 E. St. Charles Street (Hwy. 49) in San Andreas. The presentation will immediately follow the club’s monthly meeting, which starts at 10 a.m.
Everyone is invited to attend regardless of their levels of bonsai experience. For more information, contact Bob Dean, Mother Lode Bonsai Club president at (209) 754-5887. The club will not hold a public meeting in July but will resume again on August 1.
