Sharp tools make for
“Your best bonsai tools are tools with sharp edges,” said Leon “Sonny” Cozzo, who will conduct a tool sharpening demonstration at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, May 6. His free public presentation will follow the club’s 10:00 a.m. meeting at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
“Dull tools create sloppy cuts that cause bad scarring in the future,” said Cozzo. “If you take just a few minutes to clean and sharpen your cutting implements, the results will be well worth the effort.” He will show the best techniques for achieving clean edges on trunks and branches without the cost of expensive sharpening equipment.
Cozzo is a former club director and has been active in various bonsai organizations since 2006. His passion for raising miniature trees has grown over the years as demonstrated by his expanded collection at his San Andreas home. He started with a Japanese black pine bonsai kit, containing seeds, a pot and soil. This eventually grew into Internet searches for select varieties and eventually into local bonsai nursery purchases.
Mother Lode Bonsai Club members come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as valley communities. All are welcomed to attend and learn about this enjoyable hobby, regardless of their levels of experience.
