Vince Owyoung, one of Northern California’s noted bonsai presenters, will provide techniques on air layering at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s Saturday, June 4 meeting. Owyoung’s interest in the cultivation and art of bonsai spans over 50 years. He has hosted numerous demonstrations at exhibits, shows and clubs throughout the state.
Air layering, or “toriki” in Japanese, is an advanced bonsai cultivation technique. The goal is to force a tree limb to form new roots at a certain point by interrupting the flow of nutrients from the existing plant system. This method is utilized for different purposes, such as reducing the length of a trunk, growing a better “nebari” (root flare), or developing a branch for future growth as a separate tree.
The monthly Mother Lode Bonsai Club member meeting begins at 10:00 a.m., which will be followed by Owyoung’s presentation. Location is the Oak Shadows Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 1330 Calaveritas Road (off Mt. Ranch Road) in San Andreas. For more information, go to the club website at www.motherlodebonsai.org or contact Bob Dean, club president at (209) 754-5887.
