Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s Frank Garcia will demonstrate two ways of aging miniature trees at the next member meeting on Saturday, July 9. As one of the club’s experienced teachers, or sensei, he will focus on two bonsai design techniques used to create the appearance of advanced age: jin and shari.
The basic difference is that jin is applied to the tip of a trunk or branch while shari is located near the front of the trunk and resembles a shallow wound surrounded by living bark. Both methods produce the illusion of weather-beaten trunks and twisted limbs, resulting in prized trees, which are valued for their ancient appearances.
The free demonstration will start immediately after the club meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Bob and Judy Dean, 18183 Jesus Maria Road, Mokelumne Hill. A member-hosted potluck will follow at noon.
Bonsai enthusiasts from novices to experienced hobbyists throughout the community are invited to attend the public demonstration but are requested to call in advance for details on the potluck, driving instructions and parking information. Contact Bob Dean, club president at (209) 754-5887.
