A very essential but often overlooked topic in raising healthy bonsai, or plants in general, is use of the appropriate soil material. The right mixture of ingredients for a particular species can encourage growth or cause its demise.
Richard McKinstry, vice president of the Mother Lode Bonsai Club will present a free demonstration on bonsai soil substrates at the club’s Saturday, August 5 meeting. The presentation will take place immediately following the monthly meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
McKinstry, who served several terms in the past as president of the Modesto Bonsai Club, has raised miniature trees for over 17 years. He co-chaired the Golden State Bonsai Federation’s 2008 convention in Modesto and twice chaired their club’s annual shows, including conducting do-it-yourself bonsai classes.
Anyone with an interest in this ancient living art is invited to attend. Mother Lode Bonsai Club members represent all levels of experience and come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as the Central Valley.
