July’s First Friday in the Park
Leilani and the Distractions will be the featured performers for the Murphys Community Club’s popular First Fridays in the Park series on Friday, July 6, 5:30 p.m.
A local band, the group has showcased their versions of great tunes from a variety of decades at venues throughout the Mother Lode and beyond including Black Oak Casino and Ironstone Vineyards. The Distractions lineup includes Leilani Villamor on guitar and vocals, Ridge Schneider on drums, Keno Rojas on guitar and Erich Quinn on bass guitar. Ras Beeken Dan on saxophone and flute recently joined the band. He heads up the newly opened Murphys School of Music.
Leilani Villamor, the lead singer, has been a performer since the age of 12, participating in a variety of musical, television, and theater experiences which includes television shows for Disney and Fox and performance theaters such as the McCallum Theater in Palm Dessert and Stage 3 in Sonora. She has also competed on a number of shows including American Idol and Brown Bags to Stardom
The Distractions music is a special combination of different generations from old rock to newer pop. They feature R&B, blues, country and alternative ideas blending their music and instruments in a way that is traditional yet exciting. The group uses the knowledge gained through many years of performing, recording and loving music. Their performances are designed to leave the audience energized.
During the summer months, First Fridays in the Park presents a variety of musical groups playing in, or near, the familiar gazebo starting at 5:30 p.m. Friends and neighbors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a small town America gathering in the cool confines of Murphys Community Park. Food and beverages are available to purchase and each event has a community sponsor. The Mother Lode Veterinary Clinic and the Murphys Historic Hotel are the July community sponsors.
Beginning at 4 p.m. music lovers can buy hot dogs and hamburgers, prepared by the Community Club. Newsome Harlow wines and other beverages will be on sale. All proceeds will go to maintaining and improving the park.
There is no admission charge and ample free parking is available nearby. Donations to help maintain the park are always gratefully received.
