Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Department
Once again the Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District (District) will be conducting Defensible Space Inspections of residential properties within the District boundaries.
These inspections should begin about May 16, 2016, and will continue through the summer, to ensure compliance with the state law (California Public Resources Code section 4291). The initial inspections will once again be done by Volunteers-In-Prevention (VIPs) sponsored by CAL FIRE and coordinated and endorsed by the District. In addition, this year there will be 3 part-time paid inspectors funded by a grant from Homeland Security – Federal Emergency Management Agency. If you are interested in volunteering as an inspector to help keep your community fire safe, just call or come by the station. No experience necessary, we will provide all the training that you will need.
The purpose of the inspection program is to reduce the potential spread of wildfire into or through our community. To that end dead and dying vegetation will need to be removed, trees pruned, and pine needles raked. There are three disposal sites in Tuolumne County this year to dispose of this green waste.
This is the third consecutive year that the District has been engaged in this fire prevention effort in cooperation with CAL FIRE. Every year the community has been better prepared in the case of a wildfire and we expect this year to be even more prepared. With your help and support we will continue this effort in the years to come – after all, none of us wants to lose our home to a wildfire!
Once again this year we are hosting a meeting for the property owners in the District. At this meeting we will explain Defensible Space and what needs to be done around your home or cabin to provide and maintain that Defensible Space. We will lay out for you what the inspectors will be looking for during the inspections. We have already hosted a meeting for those ‘yard-clearing-guys’ who work in our community, so they know what work to accomplish on your property to be in compliance with the law. The meeting for you, the property owners will be on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 9 AM to 12 Noon, at the Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Station, 24247 Highway 108, Mi Wuk Village, CA 95346. RSVP is NOT required – come as you are!
