Jazz fans get your toes ready for tapping; the Columbia Kicks Big Band is set to play a show at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Sonora High School Auditorium in Sonora and a crowd of special guests is slated to join in the jam.
The Columbia Jazz Artist Series concert features the Columbia College jazz ensemble, joined by perennial favorite Bob Secor adding his piano and trumpet sounds to the show, with Ken Taylor playing trombone and Clint Day on bass. Mario Flores, another frequent collaborator with the big band, adds his congas to the mix. Special guest singers also perform with the band throughout the show
Of special note is a performance by the Lucky CuZn Brass Band, which adds a thoroughly New Orleans style of jazz to the concert, along with myriad other songs from many different genres. The band is comprised of schoolteachers from Tuolumne County schools.
To open the show, the Sonora High School Jazz Band will take the stage to perform at 6:30 p.m., with the rest of the music coming to life at 7 p.m.
Tickets for this concert are $15 each (or $20 for VIP seats up front), available in advance at the Mountain Bookshop in Sonora or the Manzanita Bookstore on the Columbia College campus in Columbia. Tickets may also be reserved by calling 588-5126. Proceeds from the Jan. 26 concert support music programs at Sonora High.
The series continues on Feb. 2 and 3 at Columbia College, when the Big Band Jazz Festival brings student ensembles to Columbia from all over Northern California to perform for professionals and join in a concert or two. The Vocal Jazz Festival is staged on March 2 and 3. The Bria Skonberg Quartet comes to Tuolumne County on March 13, and the Latin Jazz Big Band Season Finale concert is on April 15.
