23rd annual Calaveras Grape Stomp –
Harvesting Family Fun and Frivolity in Murphys
Calaveras County, CA – Twenty-five pounds of wine grapes freshly picked from the vineyard, a half wine barrel fitted with a spout, a partner and you. It’s Calaveras Grape Stomp time, celebrating its 23rd anniversary Oct. 1, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the historic Gold Rush town of Murphys, California, and hosted by the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance.
Set in idyllic Murphys Park the Calaveras Grape Stomp is the cornerstone of Calaveras events, bringing thousands of spirited stompers and gawkers to enjoy a full day of frivolity. The Stomp runs in conjunction with the Murphys Gold Rush Street Faire filling Murphys Main Street with art, crafts, and food booths.
More than 100 teams of two throughout the State and beyond compete each year to vie for the prestigious first, second and third place awards. Grape stomp competitions begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. and, to the delight of a roaring audience, take place every half hour. The team, comprised of one stomper and one swabber (who collects the juice), have exactly three minutes to extract as much juice from 25 pounds of wine grapes as possible. The winner of each “heat” goes to the Championship Semi-finals starting at 3:15 p.m., during which time the poundage ups to 35 pounds.
Raffle Tickets for either a New Zealand or Australia Wine Experince will be sold all day and a silent auction takes place throughout the day. Proceeds from the silent auction go back into the community in the form of student scholarships and donations to clubs, schools, and organizations in need. Murphys Friends, which organizes the annual free Christmas dinner, will again serve their tasty barbecue cuisine, alongside fine Calaveras wines by the glass, and beer.
