Study Says Hate Crimes Dropped To 10 Year Low In California

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Hate crimes in California dropped to their lowest level in a decade last year.

The trend was broken by a spike in hate crimes against Muslims after the 2001 terrorist attacks, but the number of crimes has been declining since.

The numbers mirror the general decrease in violent crime. The state Department of Justice says there were 1,691 reported hate offenses last year, down from the 1,770 reported in 2004.

Prosecutors filed 330 hate crime charges last year, and there were 137 hate crime convictions.
