Violent Crimes Down Overall But Murder Up In 2005

Sacramento, CA — California´s overall violent crime rate dropped in 2005 for the 13th straight year, but the murder rate jumped nearly 5 percent and property crimes increased slightly.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer says the violent crime rate dropped 5.1 percent in 2005 compared to 2004.

Rapes were down 3.4 percent and aggravated assaults decreased nearly 9 percent, but homicides increased 4.6 percent and robberies were up nearly 2 percent.

The property crime rate increased three tenths of a percent. The crime rate is the number of reported crimes per 100,000 residents.

California´s crime rates have been trending downward since the late 1980´s and early 1990´s.
