Calaveras Residents Fill Town Hall For Planning Session

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — A town hall meeting Monday proved that close to 200 Calaveras County residents care whether officials decide to update the General Plan.

But really, the question of the special study session wasn´t whether to update the document, it was how to go about the monumental task.

The Board of Supervisors OK´d contracting with a consultant to figure out the scope of the project. Bids will come back to the board before moving forward with that work.

Funding for the actual update will be discussed at a later date.

Over 20 people spoke. And even though officials say the idea is not on the table, many of those people discussed a building moratorium. Some residents urge for development to be put on pause until policies are revised. Others say the mere mention of the “m” word has deterred potential investors.

Supervisor Merita Callaway mentioned the “m” word herself by asking what the guidelines were for imposing the restriction. No further discussion or action was taken.

The study session was also aimed at lightening the load of county planners. Three temporary measures were passed with the goal of giving planners more time to process some 200 active applications. They included closing the office window early, letting applicants do their own initial studies and terminating inactive applications after four months.
