Report Says Moderate Salary Raise Would Keep New Teachers In Profession

Sacramento, CA — A new report says a moderate salary raise would help keep new teachers in the profession.

According to the report released Tuesday by the Public Policy Institute of California, unless the state does something to reduce the number of teachers leaving, about one-fourth of new hires will simply be replacing other recently hired teachers who have left public schools.

The report warns that will leave fewer experienced, highly qualified teachers in the classrooms.

The Public Policy Institute found that an increase of $4,400 a year would increase the chances of an elementary teacher staying on the job by 17 percent.

It also found that teachers in better-paid districts are less likely to leave their jobs or transfer to another district.
