Avian Flu Not A Big Concern

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA— Although there is a growing concern with the spread of the avian flu outside of the United States, the Tuolumne County Health Department is not worried.

The Bird Flu strain has killed more than 80 in Southeast Asia and Turkey since 2003.

Kathy Amos with the Health Department says that as of right now studies show no transmission of the virus from eating poultry, but merely having excessive exposure to the birds while working in an aviary. Currently the Bird Flu has been detected in eight countries, with more than 100 million birds infected.

The state Department of Health Services released a draft plan earlier this month detailing how California should prepare for a worldwide influenza outbreak.
