Final Water Content Measurement Set For Today

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The California Department of Water Resources will conduct its final water content test of the year today of the Sierra Nevada snowpack.

The fourth test of the year, conducted the last week of March, determined the overall water content at 46 percent. The southern Sierra Nevada was measured at a meager 38 per cent while the northern Sierra Nevada was measured at 52 percent. One year ago at that time the water content stood at 128 percent.

Frank Gehrke of the Snow Survey Office and Spokesman Don Strickland of the D.W.R. both stated that California reservoirs are in excellent shape. They are either at or above normal levels. They both stated that one lean year does not dictate a drought. However should this dry spell continue for a second year they both agree there will be serious concerns throughout the state.

April 26 was originally set for the final measurement, but that date was changed to today a week ago by the D.W.R.
