Silva Says Governor’s Plan Decreases Funding To Special Education

Sponsored by:

Sonora, Ca — During a trip to Sacramento this week, Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Joe Silva learned more information about the Governor´s proposed cuts to education.

“Especially hard hit is going to be our Special-Ed funding,” says Silva. “That makes it difficult for our most vulnerable students.”

Silva says despite the fact that Governor Schwarzenegger is calling for decreased spending in this area, schools will still have to meet all federal requirements.

“We are going to have to pull from other areas to put into special education,” says Silva. “We just can´t tell a student that they are not going to receive services because the money isn´t there.”

Silva also says the Governor would like to initiate mid-year cuts in school funding which could pose a difficult challenge for districts. Silva says schools in the county will most likely have to put a freeze on spending for the remainder of the school year on most everything other than personnel.

The Governor´s proposed cuts still need approval by both houses of the California legislature.
