D.W.R. Says Sierra Snowpack Is Below Average

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — The California Department of Water Resources first snow survey of 2009/10 shows that snowpack levels are 85 percent of normal for the date.

"Despite some recent storms, today’s snow survey shows that we’re still playing catch-up when it comes to our statewide water supplies," said DWR Chief Deputy Director Sue Sims. "Looking at the real possibility of a fourth dry year, we must prepare now, conserve now and act now, so that we have enough water for homes, farms and businesses in 2010 and in the future."

At this time last year, the snowpack levels were 76 percent of normal statewide.

Electronic sensor readings show the northern Sierra snow water equivalents currently at 77 percent of normal, the central Sierra at 85 percent and the northern Sierra at 99 percent.

The measurements are significant because they help hydrologists determine how much water California farmers and cities can expect in the coming year.
