Sheriff Awaits Information On Early Release

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele says he is concerned about all the "unanswered" questions related to the early release of 44,000 California inmates.

Sheriff Mele was Thursday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

"What disturbs the law enforcement community is that we just don’t know what the plan is going to look like," says Mele. "I believe that the court maybe looked at this as an opportunity to release these individuals to help California balance its budget. The Governor had made the decision to cut back CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation), and the only way to cut that budget number would be to release inmates."

Mele feels the state has not provided enough rehabilitation programs to help inmates transition back into society, so he fears that many of the prisoners released early will be a threat to become repeat offenders.

The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard every weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am
