Yosemite Rockslide Largest Since 1987

Yosemite, CA — Geologists at Yosemite National Park have calculated that the rock fall on March 8th at Ahwiyah Point near Half Dome was 115,000 tons in size, or 43,000 cubic meters.
Park Ranger Scott Gediman says it was considerably larger than the 1996 Happy Isles rock fall, which was estimated at 30,000 cubic meters. Therefore, it was the largest fall in Yosemite since a 1987 event known as the Middle Brother rockslide.
As a result of last month’s incident, the southern portion of the Mirror Lake Loop Trail is closed to hikers indefinitely.
