Update: Merced Fire Ignites In Snelling Area

Update at 7:30pm: CAL Fire updates that the Merced Fire is now up to 150 acres and it remains 5-percent contained.

Update at 4:30pm: CAL Fire reports that the Merced Fire east of Snelling is now 100 acres and 5-percent contained.

Air and ground resources continue to fight the fire. There are no reports of any structures being damaged. The fire is situated off Merced Falls Road and La Grange Road and it has been burning along a creek bottom. The fire has been putting up a visible plume of smoke in the region. It is unclear what caused the blaze.

Update at 3:38pm: The latest size estimate on what is being called the “Merced Fire” remains 50 acres and there is no containment.

Additional air and ground resources are responding to the blaze, located off Merced Falls Road and La Grange Road, east of Snelling. Activity will continue throughout the afternoon and into evening. It is unclear what ignited the fire, according to CAL Fire. Smoke from the incident has been visible in parts of Tuolumne County.

Original story posted at 2:50pm: Snelling, CA — Smoke is visible in parts of Tuolumne County, as air and ground resources are battling a 50 acre fire in the Snelling area.

The CAL Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit reports that it is burning along a creek bottom in the area of Merced Falls Road, between La Grange Road and Hornitos Road. A large contingent of air and ground resources are on the scene, including aircraft from Columbia Air Attack Base. No structures have been damaged, but there are some in the vicinity of the fire.
