Sonora Man Arrested On Several Charges Following Dispute

Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that 45-year-old Matthew Burgess of Sonora allegedly held a victim against her will and later fled the area.

The sheriff’s office reports, “Burgess forcefully took the victim to his house against her will and kept her inside by means of physical force and brandished a firearm during the incident. He took the victim’s cell phone to prevent her from calling law enforcement. Burgess also made statements to the victim in an attempt to prevent her from calling law enforcement.”

The sheriff’s office adds that Burgess was contacted and refused to cooperate with the investigation. He then fled the area and was located in the Yosemite area. Following a standoff with Federal Law Enforcement, he was taken into custody. He faces charges of false imprisonment, kidnapping, criminal threats, damaging or destroying a communication device, resisting arrest and stalking.
