Forest Opening Campgrounds

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – 28 campgrounds in the Stanislaus National Forest will be open this Memorial Day weekend.

Spokesperson Pat Kaunert says due to the heavy snowpack this winter, some locations will remain closed until mid-summer. The Stanislaus National Forest has a total of 52 developed campgrounds.

Forest visitors are encouraged to contact a local Ranger Station to learn information about conditions, campfire permits and the best places to camp. Most campgrounds are operated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Snow and ice still covers most trailheads and hiking trails in the Emigrant, Carson-Iceberg and Mokelumne Wildernesses.

Kaunert says rivers and streams throughout the Forest are running swift, and at higher than normal levels due to the snowpack, so use extra caution.

Forest roads are open at elevations below 6,000 ft.
