Raising Taxes To Save Programs?

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Senate Democrats are proposing to raise $4.9 billion in taxes and other revenue in order to save CAL Works and other social programs.

The plan would increase vehicle licensing fees, delay corporate tax cuts and extend an income tax surcharge.

25th District Republican Assembly Tom Berryhill states, "Taxes are not the answer. It has been proven time and again that taxes will not get us out of this mess. It is time for the Democrats to come to the realization that they are going to have to go cold turkey and quit their addictive spending behaviors once and for all."

California Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor has recommended that lawmakers make cuts and raise taxes.

Republicans argue that this is the wrong approach given the slow economy.
