Ballard, Kuntz Speak Out

Copperopolis, CA — The two candidates for Calaveras County Sheriff had the opportunity to promote their candidacy Thursday evening.

Custody Bureau Commander Ed Ballard and former command staff member Gary Kuntz stated their respective cases during the Saddle Creek Candidates Night.

Ballard is a Calaveras County native. He’s a five year Navy veteran. He commented, “I felt at this time the need for my qualifications and my background for these difficult economic times required me to do it (run). We need to provide services to our community and keep our staff in tact. I felt it was vitally important during these times with my background and my knowledge that I become the Calaveras County Sheriff to make sure we come out of it (difficult times) in the end.”

From Gary Kuntz, “I’ve worked 25 years in the Sheriff’s Department and I retired as a Lt. Commander. I think the department needs to go in a new direction, it needs new leadership and I feel I’m the person to do that.”

Kuntz added that he is an advocate of community policing; deputies working in even closer contact with the public to insure a greater degree of safety.

Kuntz commented that earlier Thursday he had received the endorsement of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association.
