Tourist Filled Weekend Anticipated

Sponsored by:

This weekend Tuolumne County may see the highest number of tourists- to-dateĀ for 2010.

Nancy Sikes, Executive Director for the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau was Friday’s KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

According to Sikes, the first ever California Winter Senior Games will take place at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort, today through Sunday. Also a large amount of out-of-town visitors will be attending the annual Celtic Faire at the Motherlode Fairgrounds.

According to Sikes, the projected number of both international and in-state visitors remains on par with last Spring, which is great news considering the depressed economy. Sikes points to other events that will help bring new visitors this Spring as well, including the Northern California Soap Box Derby that will be held for the first time in Tuolumne City.

The western half of the USA saw major drops in tourism last year, but the two overall exceptions were bothĀ the state of Utah and the Motherlode in California (Yosemite National Park saw a record number of tourists).

Sikes continues to monitor the possibility of the closure of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown and/or Columbia State Park after June. The state Government in Sacramento, has only budgeted the entire California State Park System through June 30th.

The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am
