Segarini Discusses Retail In Tuolumne County
Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce President George Segarini is encouraged by what he sees as signs of a gradual economic turnaround in Tuolumne County.
Segarini was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
A few of the immediate promising signs that Segarini pointed to is the grand opening of Big Lots this morning in part the old Mervyn’s store. Two other retailers will also open their doors soon in the same location. Walmart is eventually expected to expand as well, which will include a full grocery store.
Sierra Pacific Mill in Standard is also back in business and that will help bring an economic boost to local retail business.
A concern that Segarini has and is hoping to prevent, is the potential closure (within the next year) of Railtown 1897 in Jamestown.
“I’ve been working with community leaders and state representatives to prevent that from happening,” said Segarini.
Generally speaking, according to Segarinni, businesses that have perhaps suffered the most lately in Tuolumne County have been in the restaurant industry. Only two years ago, they were singled out as faring the best.
“It’s a constant ebb and flow for any business owner, especially during difficult economic times,” said Segarini, “and the Chamber offers class workshops, advice and support for its members.”
