Supervisors Worried About Redistricting

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — There is some displeasure brewing about the proposed redistricting maps put together for Assembly, Senate and Congressional districts.

Tuesday the Tuolumne County Supervisors unanimously gave consent to have staff formulate a letter voicing concerns, and propose an alternate solution.

As reported previously, the new districts would combine many of the mountain counties across the Sierra Nevada. Currently Tuolumne County’s district runs primarily east to west, spreading into much of Stanislaus County and other portions of the Central Valley. A fear expressed is that Tuolumne County would lose some access to representatives because the district would be so geographically spread out.

The changes would result in Tuolumne County losing current Senator Tom Berryhill, Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen and Congressman Jeff Denham.

Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO George Segarini noted to the Supervisors that the Chamber will be sending a letter of displeasure too. The issue was recently voted on by the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee.

The maps are expected to change before the final draft is created later this year. Public hearings on the maps are being held across the state, but none are scheduled for the Mother Lode. The closest is June 24 in Stockton.
