Cars Tips For Winter

Sponsored by:

As another winter storm approaches this week, many will be tempted to leave the car running unattended to allow it to warm up in the morning.

“Most of our auto thefts around here are crimes of opportunity, so don’t make yourself a victim,” says Mike Remmel, Sonora Area CHP Officer. “Criminals typically aren’t overly sophisticated, so if you do a few simple things like locking the doors and not leave it running, you won’t set yourself up to be a victim.”

San Andreas based CHP Officer Rebecca Myers echoes the advice. “There are many good people up here, but there are also the bad elements,” says Officer Myers. “They’ll take your car if they can.”

Remmell and Myers were Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Both Myers and Remmell say most car thefts in the Mother Lode are vehicles left unlocked and unattended.

With the snow storm approaching, also make sure that your tire chains fit your tire size. Carry the chains in your car beginning today.

Finally, Remmel said that the cell phone compliance in Tuolumne County continues to be dismal and he reminds all drivers that driving while talking on a hand held cell phone is against the law (so is texting). Use a wireless device if you must talk at all. Children under the age of 18 are not even allowed to use a wireless device.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:46, 7:46 and 8:46am
