Accidents And DUI’s Down
San Andreas, CA– This year the number of accidents and DUI arrests over the New Year’s holiday weekend were down.
CHP Officers Mike Remmel and Rebecca Myers were Thursday’s KVML “Newsmakers of the Day”.
According to the CHP, the Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) that began last Friday evening and continued until late Sunday, was a day shorter than last year’s. Statewide, the CHP arrested 961 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence compared to 1,252 for the same time last year. Also in the state, 25 people died in vehicle accidents this year compared to 30 people last year.
“For New Year’s in Calaveras County, the CHP didn’t arrest one single person,” said Myers from the San Andreas CHP. “Compared to last year, we arrested two drivers for DUI.”
Myers said there were also three accidents reported this year in the county compared to two accidents reported last year. Although Calaveras County had one fatality in 2009 on New Year’s Day, there were no fatalities in 2010.
San Andreas CHP Officers wrote 20 citations over the holiday weekend. Most were for speeding, several mechanical violations, one citation for failing to wear a seatbelt and another for failure to have chains on their vehicle in a chain control area.
In Tuolumne County the CHP had a busier weekend. Remmel from the Tuolumne County CHP said “This year we had five DUI arrests, three non-injury accidents and one minor injury accident. We sited 17 individuals for speeding and 15 other violations. We also wrote 27 parking tickets up at Little Sweden.”
Remmel says these numbers are down from last year. During the New Year’s MEP last year, the CHP reported five DUI arrests and one fatal accident. There were no fatalities reported this year in Tuolumne County.
