Breaks And Overtime For Babysitters

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Parents you may now have to give your babysitter overtime and breaks. The state Senate has passed a bill that would make nannies, housekeepers, childcare providers and caregivers in California eligible for those.

The bill passed the Senate on a 21-13 vote after a lengthy partisan debate Wednesday. Assemblymemeber Kristin Olsen is opposes the bill and says “I am just outraged by this bill. This push to unionist babysitters is absolutely insane. So am I suppose to go out and hire a second babysitter so that my babysitter can take a fifteen minute break? I mean that’s just crazy.” Olsen adds “It’s not good for parents; it’s not good for kids or the babysitters who are trying to get honest jobs. This is not what we should be spending our time on in the California Legislature.”

The bill’s author, Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco, says California would be the second state, after New York, to adopt such rules.

The AP reports the bill would require that live-in workers be compensated if their eight-hour rest period was interrupted. They say regulations governing their working conditions would be set by the state Department of Industrial Relations by January 2014. The AP says the bill states domestic workers face labor issues including working long hours for low wages and a lack of job security.

The bill now returns to the Assembly for a final vote.
