Railtown Supporters Celebrate

Jamestown, CA — Railtown Supporters were happy to report they had good news this morning. The Tuesday planning meeting to determine the future of Railtown ran long, but the park will not close for at least the next six months.

Railtown 1897 will recieve the $75,000 dollar matching grant from the Sonora Area Foundation. The park now has a total of $150,000 dollars to maintain operations.

John Zach, a Rail town supporter and Twain Harte Rotary President, says “Short term, there might be some additional fundraisers. Long term, we need to find something other than fundraising.” He added, “I think fundraising will always be a component of the process but we need figure out through the county, through another non-profit, with out having to be constantly out asking for funding from the public.”

Several groups are participating in an effort to keep Railtown 1897 open. The State has discontinued funding for Railtown and several other State Parks.

Zach says they determined that they will need an additional $30 thousand dollars to keep the park open until June 2013 which is the next full fiscal year.
