Calaveras Forest Project Receives Money

Sponsored by:

The Sierra Nevada Conservancy this week allocated nearly $4.6 million to help restore the ecological health of some forest land in the region.

Since its creation in 2004, the state agency has awarded approximately $45 million in Proposition 84 funds. The latest allocation includes $349,000 for the Big Trees State Park Forest Restoration Project in Calaveras County. The work will include thinning the understory and ladder fuels to protect the Giant Sequoia and Big Tree Creek.

“Many of our forests are in such poor ecological health that in many instances they are at high risk of being overrun by catastrophic wildfire,” says Jim Branham, SNC Executive Director. “These projects will go a long way toward reducing that threat and protecting our watersheds, as called for under Prop 84 guidelines.”

Other counties that received money for projects this week include Butte, Lassen, Mono, Nevada, Tulare, Madera, Plumas and Placer.
