Officials Urge Preparation Ahead Of Storm Set To Soak The Mother Lode

Sonora, CA — Tuolumne County officials are alerting residents that several days of winter storm weather are requiring caution and emergency preparedness planning.

As indicated in the Monday afternoon forecast, reported here, significant precipitation with potential flooding in problem areas is anticipated. Officials stress that the National Weather Service is forecasting a significant winter storm for our area starting tonight and continuing for several days.

The storms will bring moderate to heavy rains at times as well as wind gusts and accumulating snows at higher elevations. Since rainfall on previously accumulated snow could lead to snow melt and higher levels of runoff, residents should remain vigilant when traveling and avoid flooded areas.

Tuolumne County Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the Roads Division indicate that sand is available at the below listed locations and that residents must bring your own shovel and bags to fill.

Storm Preparation Tips

— Reduce or eliminate unnecessary travel during the storm period
— Clear debris away from culverts and drains and keep gutters clear of debris
— Keep a full tank of gas in vehicle
— Have emergency supplies on hand: sandbags, prescription medications, food/water, flashlights, battery-operated radio, battery-operated lanterns, batteries, a phone that plugs directly into the wall, etc.
— Check on neighbors who may have special needs
— Prepare for the potential for power outages due to wind, downed trees, etc.
— Stay clear of hazards such as rising water and downed power lines
— Check to ensure pets/livestock are safe, especially those animals that live outside
