“Suspicious Activity” In Sonora Turns Out To Be Bears
Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Star Mobile Estates on Jamestown Road in Sonora last night for a report of “suspicious activity.”
Deputies arrived and found that a mama bear and her cub were in the park and rummaging through the trash. The cub climbed up a nearby tree and the protective mama followed close behind. The sheriff’s office reports the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was quickly notified and came to the park until the two bears climbed back down and continued along their way.
Often times bears will venture into settled areas this time of year in search of food. The Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends residents refrain from tossing food scraps into the yard, use a bear proof garbage container, do not leave food or trash in your car, keep grills clean and stored in a garage or shed, bring pets in at night and keep doors and windows locked when your property is unoccupied.
If a bear finds a way into your home, the Department of Fish and Wildlife says you should not confront the animal, but give it an escape route. If a bear cannot make its way out, you should go to a safe location and call 911.
