Community Gives Input On Downtown Sonora Improvements

Sonora, CA — Ways to improve pedestrian safety and mobility in Sonora was the focus at city hall this morning.

A plan is being developed that will eventually be submitted to Caltrans in hopes of receiving state grant money. A public workshop took place from 8am-1pm today, highlighted by a Vision Sonora committee meeting at 9am. Around 25 were on hand for that portion of the morning, where a presentation on the safety and mobility project was delivered by local officials. A main takeaway from those in attendance was the desire to maintain the historical ambiance of downtown Sonora and avoid projects that may threaten it.

Throughout the entire morning, and early afternoon, residents could drop by and look at giant maps of the downtown district, stretching from Stockton Road to the Red Church, and place stickers where they would like to see things like bulb-outs, more lighting, street furniture, pedestrian signals, runway lights, etc. Those not wanting to do the sticker option could fill out a form.

By 11am, around 40-50 people had stopped by city hall to view the ideas, with many giving input.

Tuolumne County Transportation Council Executive Director Darin Grossi notes that the comment period for the project has been extended through late January, and within the next week, members of the community will be able to see the details on the Tuolumne County Transportation Council website, and submit comments online.

Sonora Mayor Connie Williams adds that the City Council will also hear a presentation at its meeting on January 15, and the merchants groups will hear about it on January 24, at its monthly 8am meeting.

The final plan, and grant application, is expected to be completed in March.
