Brown Asks Obama To Ban Additional Offshore Drilling

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Governor Jerry Brown sent a letter to President Obama today asking for a permanent ban on new offshore oil and gas leasing in federal waters off California’s coast.

You can read it by clicking here. The Governor writes, “Clearly, large new oil and gas reserves would be inconsistent with our overriding imperative to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat the devastating impacts of climate change. Now is the time to make permanent the protection of our ocean waters and beaches from new oil and gas drilling.”

A temporary ban on new leases off the shores of California, Oregon and Washington is set to expire in 2022. When asked by reporters this afternoon, the Associated Press reports that Governor Brown stated that he does not know if President-elect Trump would have the ability to overturn a permanent ban by President Obama. Brown plans to ask the Governors of Oregon and Washington if they would like to join the effort.
