Chewing, Not A Cut, Eyed As Cause Of Comcast Outage

Sonora, CA — Although crews continue to search for the exact cause of this week’s internet outage in the Mother Lode, the company is pointing to rodents as the possible culprits.

As first reported by Clarke Broadcasting on Tuesday around 3 p.m., a fiber links outage of Comcast’s Metro Ethernet or Enterprise service left some businesses in the Mother Lode without access to internet for about four hours.

The company reports 52 businesses, including Clarke Broadcasting’s myMotherlode.com, were impacted in the areas of Angles Camp, Arnold, Jamestown, Sonora, Soulsbyville and Tuolumne. Comcast spokesperson Jenny Gendron declined a taped interview but released this statement, “The cause of the fiber issue has yet to be determined however based on multiple fibers being damaged it is suspected to be something like a squirrel chew.”

Comcast had originally told customers crews were investigating a possible cut line in the Sonora and Tuolumne area, which may have been accidental or deliberate. Crews were able to restore service to the area the same day by rerouting traffic to a spare fiber-optic cable.
