Update: Mother Lode Law Enforcement Warns Of Scam

Sponsored by:

Update at 1pm: The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department has also posted a scam alert related to tax season involving the same scam detailed in the story below regarding Calaveras County.  Some report getting a recording saying it is their final notice to pay the IRS or a warrant will be issued for your arrest. Sheriff’s official say do not return the call and never give out any personal information to a stranger over the phone.  This is not a new scam and in the past the IRS has stated its agents will never call and ask for personal information or payments.  Scams can be reported to the IRS by calling 1-877-382-4357.

Original Post at 9am: San Andreas, CA — The Sheriff’s Office in Calaveras County has received dozens of calls over just the past two days regarding a phone scam.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that scammers are trying to impersonate IRS agents and are requesting personal or bank account information. The callers are being aggressive and are sometimes threatening to make an arrest, deportation, revoke licenses and other things. The Sheriff’s Office advises the public to be on alert and know that these attempts are fraudulent. In addition, law enforcement officials recommend that you report these scams directly to the Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484. You can also go to www.tigta.gov.
