Governor To Award Medal Of Valor To Local Law Officer

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – Saved by the buckle on his service belt, an officer shot at during a deadly encounter with an ex con last fall in downtown Sonora will next week receive a medal of valor from the governor.

As City of Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson explains, “The Governor’s Public Safety Officer Medal of Honor Review Board reviews several nominations across the state, and after reviewing the case involving Ryan Webb and his shooting on the 22nd of November, 2014, they decided to issue him this valor presentation, which is the highest valor award honor given out by the State of California.”

Stinson states that this coming Monday, Sept. 14, Webb will receive the award from Governor Jerry Brown, in person, at a dedicated State Capitol ceremony.

As previously reported, 29-year Bruce Thomas Snyder was on active parole for assault with a deadly weapon, when police responded to a report of a man threatening others with a weapon at a local residence. Spotted by police soon after in downtown Sonora, during a vehicle stop, Snyder initiated a gun battle and police chase in which many rounds were fired and at least two people were hit before he was killed on scene.

Clearly pleased with Webb’s honor, Stinson notes, “This is an award that’s very rewarding, not only to the officer but to the department as well — it shows that the State Capitol is paying attention to what’s going on throughout the state, and not just in large metropolitan areas.”

The California Peace Officers’ Association Awards Committee will also present Webb with the organization’s Award of Valor on Monday, Oct. 12 at the Long Beach Convention Center.
