Update: Large Highway 108 Fire Ignited By Fatal Crash

Update at 9:30pm: CAL Fire reports the fire off Highway 108 near Tulloch Dam Road grew to 110 acres. Crews remain on scene this evening mopping up.

Sgt. Scott Johnson of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that one eastbound lane of Highway 108 re-opened at 7:30pm and the second lane re-opened shortly after 8pm.  The CHP has not released any additional information on the fatal accident that ignited the fire.

Update at 5:40 pm: Firefighters have stopped the forward rate of spread of the 60 acre vegetation fire south of Highway 108 near Tulloch Dam Road. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Sgt. Scott Johnson reports that eastbound Highway 108 will be closed until approximately 7:30pm while crews cleanup the significant vehicle accident that ignited the fire. No additional details are available about the crash, but the CHP reports that it was a fatal incident. Westbound traffic on Highway 108 is moving through the area.

Original Story at 5pm: Tuolumne County, CA — Firefighters are working to extinguish a 50-60 acre fire south of Highway 108 near Tulloch Dam Road.

It is in the area where the highway turns to four lanes. Eastbound Highway 108 traffic is currently blocked, and traffic is very congested. Some vehicles are starting to turn around and go the opposite direction. The CHP reports the fire was ignited by a fatal vehicle accident on Highway 108. No further information is immediately available. Avoid the area if possible, and be prepared for an extended delay if you are traveling on Highway 108. No homes or structures are considered in danger.
