Spotlight On Summerville School Board Candidates
Tuolumne, CA – Five candidates will shortly vie to fill a seat on the Summerville Union High School District Board, due to a recent, sudden vacancy.
As previously reported, several weeks ago, former board president Carrie Ashe submitted her resignation for personal reasons, which the board accepted in early June.
After deciding to make a provisional appointment, the remaining board members sought applications from the public. The board will now shortly hear from five area residents seeking the position at a candidate forum scheduled for Monday, August 10 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in viewing the prospective board members’ individual applications may click here. Below are bios on the five:
Janette Herrera, 32, a resident of the school district for the past nine years, is married with three children, including one attending Summerville High. Currently working on a liberal studies teaching prep degree at Columbia College, she has worked as a student ambassador at the college as well as a children’s program volunteer at Sierra Bible Church and served on the Parent Committee at Twain Harte Elementary.
Nancy Hoyt, 55, a teacher at Belleview Elementary School in Sonora for more than two decades, is also the parent of a Summerville High student. Currently enrolled in a masters degree program at the Teachers College of San Joaquin, she holds a BA in sociology from Sonoma State University.
Spring Maddox, 35, an alumnus and parent of children in the school district, is a registered nurse at Sonora Regional Medical Center. She served on the Summerville Elementary School, Board for six years and has an extensive background in local volunteerism, including 13 years as a programs coordinator at Sierra Bible Church. She earned her nursing degree from California State University-Chico.
Jack Pool, 64, a licensed marriage and family therapist and the founder-director of Columbine Counseling Center, in Twain Harte, also has a background in teaching and school counseling. He is a longtime resident with children who were educated in the district. Among his credentials are a masters of arts in educational psychology and counseling; teaching credential from Chapman University and a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University. He is also a military veteran with service in the US Army and National Guard.
Bryan Tarter, 43, is the father of two children in the school district. The owner of Sierra Brush and Snow Removal for the past nine years, he previously worked as foreman at Teichert Construction in French Camp for ten years, and before that served in the US Navy. His community service background includes serving as president of the Ponderosa Homeowners Association and Tuolumne County Youth Football League.
