State Concerned About Oil And Gas Contamination

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — California lawmakers will hold a joint committee hearing today focused on the impact of oil and gas contamination on drinking water.

The Associated Press reports that recent state and federal reports cite widespread failings by state regulators from protecting underground water from oil and gas pollution, and multiple violations of the federal US Safe Drinking Water Act. Notably, up for review is how some oil and gas producers have injected steam into the ground, to the point that it cracks open underground rock formations, allowing for contamination of water sources. The hearing will review whether this practice is routinely being done at unsafe and illegal levels, and steps that can be taken to prevent it.

The Joint Hearing today in Sacramento will include members of committees representing water, natural resources and environmental matters.
