Steven Lawrence Hassen,  Born August 6, 1960 passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Adventist Health Sonora peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 61. He was born in Whittier, California to a musical family. His mother was a concert cellist, and his father owned a music store. When he was around 14, the family moved to Aptos, near Santa Cruz, California, where he completed his education.

Always good with his hands, Steve picked up odd jobs while he was in high school, eventually working with an electrician and learning the trade at which he was especially good. As time went on, he learned more and more of the trade, eventually becoming an apprentice, then journeyman and finally an electrical contractor. During this time, he encountered the love of his life, Corina, and married her and together they had two daughters, Kristi, and Hailey, which they raised in Aptos and Santa Cruz.

As time went on, there came two more children, this time, two boys, Colton and Ryan and the family grew to six. Steve continued with his work as an electrician, learning more, working for one contractor after another. It was hard working and caring for the children, so in 2006, the family moved to Sonora to be near Corina’s family. The Hassen family prospered there with Steve working for a local electrical contractor until, finally, he achieved his long-time goal of becoming an electrical contractor himself.

When an opportunity came along, he applied for and was successful in taking a job with the State of California Correctional Facilities as a master electrician which led to becoming a stationary engineer. The family continued to flourish, and, in 2019 they were able to buy their home in the Sonora countryside where Steve and Corina could enjoy the birds, flowers, dogs, and horses that they loved.

Steve was enamored with so much in life. His love for German Shepherds, and especially his most beloved dog Cooper. Everyone who knew Steve, knew how much he loved a conversation and a good laugh. Worked to live and lived to work, he was the only one who would never ignore a call to make a buck. Above all else, Steve loved and cherished his family. This is how he will be remembered: as a man who loved and was loved by so many. He leaves behind his love of 33 years, Corina, his four children, Kristi (Jake), Hailey (William), Colton and Ryan, of Sonora; his grandchildren G1 & G2 Gavin & Gabriel, and his “Bratface” Eleanor; his brother, Richard of Anaheim Hills; his sister, Laurie of Aptos; as well as numerous relatives and an incredible number of friends.

He was very lucky to have a handful of friends that meant the world to him. A private service will be held and ‘A Spark Of Life’ celebration will be held on Sunday, October 10.
