Update: Grass Fire Along HWY 108 Near Sonora, Evacuations Ordered

August 26 Update at 6:40 p.m.: CAL Fire reports that Tuolumne Memorial Hall located at 18375 Fir Ave in Tuolumne has been set up as a shelter. The Westside property near the Summerville High High School is taking RVs. For day 2 Washington fire information view the update here.

Update at 6:30 p.m.: CAL Fire reports that the Washington Fire that was two fires has merged into one that includes areas along Stockton Road in Sonora and near Golf Links Road in Jamestown is now one fire estimated at 81 acres in size.  It is 5% contained and Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Officials in the fire command center tell us the fire is holding within the fire’s perimeter. CAL Fire updates that “extreme fire behavior and dry fuels created an aggressive firefight this afternoon.” They added that crews will” remain engaged in structure defense and construct fire line throughout
the night.”

Highway 108 remains closed from South Washington to Golf Links Road.

Regarding shelters, we are still waiting on word for one for those displaced by the fire. For animals there are two:

Update at 5:30 p.m.: Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is reporting from the fire command center that the Washington Fire is 81 acres. No breakdown of the acreage between the blazes has been given. Sheriff’s spokesperson Nicco Sandelin says the fire is holding within the fire’s containment lines. All evacuation orders and advisories remain in place and can be found below.

Update at 3:44 p.m.: Here are the latest mandatory evacuations from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office:

The city of Sonora from W. of Stockton Rd to W of S. Washington St. Including all roads in between. This includes all downtown hotels on Stockton and S Washington

Update at 3:35 p.m.: Columbia College is closed for the remainder of the day as a result of the fires near Jamestown and Sonora.

Update at 3:25 p.m.: CAL Fire reports that the Washington Fire that is actually two fires the flames on the Golf Links Road side in Jamestown has grown to 40 acres. The  Stockton Road location in Sonora remains at 10 acres. Stockton Road is closed and Highway 108 is closed from that roadway to South Washington Street. Listed below are all of the current evacuation orders:

Update at 2:50 p.m.: There has been a lot of fire activity on Highway 108 between Sonora and Jamestown today. CAL Fire reports that they have learned that what is being referred to as the Washington Fire is at two separate incidents. There is a 10-acre fire near 108 and Stockton Road and a 35-acre fire near Golf Links Road. More information is below.

Update at 2:45 p.m.: Sonore Police Department is reporting mandatory evacuations in the area of Woodside and South Gate drives, and Fairview lane, including all side roads.

Tuolumne Utility District has put out this statement regarding water usage:

“Tuolumne Utilities District (TUD), like most of Tuolumne County, is experiencing a power outage due to a vegetation fire that started this afternoon off of Stockton Road in Sonora the #WashingtonFire. If you live in the Sonora or Jamestown area, please limit your water use in order to preserve water for fire suppression efforts.”

Update at 2:30 p.m.: Jamestown Elementary School reports that students with select bus stops will be kept at school due to the fire near Highway 108 and Golf Links Road.

Those who have stops on Golf Links, Mill Villa, Circle Drive, Chamberlain Road, and 5th Avenue will have parent pickup at the school. The other bus routes are running as scheduled.

Update at 2:15 p.m.: The Washington Fire burning near Golf Links Road in Jamestown has forced residents from their homes. Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office has given this update on evacuations:

An evacuation advisory has been set for the city of Sonora.

1. Please remain calm inform family of the advisory

2. have a plan for reuniting if necessary

3. Lock doors and windows prior to leaving

4. Take pets with you if possible

5. Take medications, blanket, flashlight, credit cards or cash, personal papers, a change of clothing.

**FIRE IN JAMESTOWN **

Fire in the area of Highway 108 and Golf Links Road in Jamestown.

Evacuations are taking place at the following locations:

Golden Dove Lane

Please avoid the area to allow crews to work.

Update at 2:10 p.m.:  There are new evacuations underway in the Washington Fire burning along Highway 108 near Golf Links Road in Jamestown. Current evacuations are along Crooked Lane and Silver Pine Road. For additional evacuation orders see below.

Highway 108 is closed from Washington Street to Golf Links Road. PG&E is reporting over 20,000 customers from below Jamestown to above Long Barn along the highway have lost power.

Update at 1:55 p.m.: The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office has expanded the evacuation orders due to the fire on Highway 108. There are evacuations underway now along McKibbon Drive, Golf Links Road, North Drive, Alley Drive, Circle Drive, and Golden Dove Lane. The latest size estimate remains 15 acres. Highway 108 is closed near the fire.

Update at 1:50 p.m.: CAL Fire reports that the blaze has been dubbed the Washington Fire burning on both sides of Highway 108 near Golf Links and Mill Villa roads. The fire is 15 acres in size and threatening homes in the area.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that there are evacuations underway along Alley Drive, Circle Drive, and Golden Dove Lane. The highway is closed at Washington Street and between Golf Links and Stockton roads.

Original post at 1:35 p.m.: Jamestown, CA — Air and ground resources are responding to a fire on Highway 108 in Jamestown near Golf Links Road and Mill Villa Road.

The flames are burning on both sides of the road.  The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that there are evacuations underway along Alley Drive, Circle Drive, and Golden Dove Lane. There is no word on the fire’s activity regarding its size or rate of spread. Be prepared for activity in the area. We’ll pass along more information when it becomes available.
