Sonora Post Office To Close?

Sonora, CA — One of Sonora’s downtown Post Offices could be closed. The U.S. Postal Service reports a lack of customers, and the close proximity of the two downtown stations, has prompted the move. Postal Officials say they are conducting a discontinuance feasibility study of the post office on 83 South Stewart Street. They have mailed out surveys to the public questioning their use of that station.

Postal Spokesperson Augustine Ruiz says, “We are seeing a trend nationally, not just here, where we see foot traffic being reduced at our brick and mortar post offices. Eighty percent of our business is from people buying postage and you can do that online or at other retail shipping outlets.”

There will also be a community meeting to discuss the possible closure on Tuesday at the Main Post Office at 781 South Washington Street from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. That office is not in danger of closing. Surveys and written comments can be turned in at the meeting.

In addition, the public will have 60 days after the meeting to hand in comments at the Stewart Street Station. The final decision on the closure will be made in Washington D.C. and word could come as soon as April. A couple of workers would be relocated if facility is closed.
