Inmate Dies Following Heart Transplant

Sponsored by:

A 32-year old California prison inmate, believed to be the nation´s first inmate to receive a heart transplant, has died at Stanford Medical Center. State Department of Corrections officials say the inmate died at 11 p.m. Monday, more than 11 months after receiving his transplant.

Prison officials say the inmate´s body had apparently been rejecting the organ. The unidentified prisoner, serving a 14-year sentence for second-degree robbery, had been in critical condition since November 30th. His transplant raised ethical questions nationwide about whether people who have committed crimes should be eligible for organ transplants.
