San Francisco Still In Olympics Running

Sponsored by:

It´s now down to two.

The group trying to bring the 2012 Olympics to San Francisco is celebrating today.

The U.S. Olympic Committee announced this afternoon San Francisco will now compete with New York to be the sole American nominee for the 2012 Games.

The good news comes after three years of work and $5 million in expenses by San Francisco boosters.

The decision was announced in Chicago just after 2 p.m. Pacific time. Now the Olympic Committee will tour the two chosen cities and announce a final winner by November third.

The chosen U.S. city will face stiff competition from cities as diverse as Havana, London and Istanbul. The final decision will be made by 2005.

Tony Winnicker is communications director for the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee. He says San Francisco has the cachet to compete against cities as exotic as Istanbul, Paris, Madrid and other world cultural centers competing for the 2012 Games.
