Census Brings Housing Woes To Light

Sponsored by:

New census figures show California´s the worst state in the country when it comes to creating new housing.

Even though the West was the fastest-growing region in the nation from 1990 to 2000, it was the only region to have a decline in the number of housing units per person.

California lagged in housing units per person even in 1990, and has done a relatively poor job of catching up.

California ranked 47th in adding new housing per capita, ahead of Colorado, Arizona, Texas and Nevada.

Possible reasons for the lag are the state has grown so fast that the construction industry can´t keep up and California´s development approval processes are more complicated, and often more restrictive, than other states.
