The state has until the end of the year to remove the additive MTBE from gasoline and replace it with thanol. But officials worry they won´t meet the deadline, driving up gas prices. Snags in producing 950 million gallons of ethanol for California could cause gas prices to jump by as much as
50 cents this year.
