SFO Evacuation Raises Questions

Sponsored by:

An airport screeners official says the man who triggered an alarm at San Francisco International Airport was allowed to walk away because workers tried to cover their mistake and were slow to react.

A security screener allowed the traveler to disappear into the crowd on Wednesday while he searched for his supervisor. It took more than an hour before the terminal was evacuated.

Airport officials said they could have responded twice as quickly if United Airlines or Argenbright Security immediately sounded a built-in alarm system.

Daz Lamparas, a union representative for SFO screeners, says he believes they were trying to cover their mistake. He says a lack of training and experience led to the debacle.

Argenbright has suspended the screener.
